We had to put a beloved cat down. Our girls were 6 and 7.


We just told them the truth. Our cat was very sick and would not be getting better. That we want to say goodbye and keep her from being in a lot of pain. They understood. Took it well. Put a picture of her up and talked about our fond memories of her.

Kids will pick-apart a lie, so I suggest not to try it. (Santa, Easter bunny, etc. excluded... that's just fun). Kids deal with these things better than expected. Don't hide the tears when talking about it. Tell them you are sad, and tell them why. Always follow up with good memories.
